Quarantine Tank Empty Quarantine Tank

Post by Guest 25/5/2012, 12:32

Hi Everyone
With many of us recently having problems with our tanks where we have lost fish, I thought I would ask the question of how many people have a quarantine tank.
Do you automatically treat the fish in the Quarantine tank prior to putting them in your main tank/s, regardless of if they look ill or not?
Do you keep the tank running when there is no fish in them?
How long do you leave/treat the fish in your quarantine tank before putting them in to your main tank?

I have set up a Quarantine tank and had it running with fish in for about 5 weeks now, I left the first fish in there for 4 weeks before transferring her to my main tank, but was wondering if I treat the tank could I have reduced this period of time and what would be the best thing to treat it with? Is there a treatment that is a good all rounder?

I realise that people do things differently but would like your input into how you do it.

Thanks for reading and look forward to receiving your replies

we were advised to use general tonic when ours were ill, it says on the bottle u can use it to treat most things and as a precautionary measure whenever new fish are introduced, it also advises u treat your main tank with it every 6 months just to keep the normal parasites levels to a minimum Smile

The only fish i quarantine now are the discus, They get a salt bath, wormed, fluked, and dosed with a general tonic and of course keep a close eye on them. But i've found just buying quality fish from someone you know has been looking after them makes a big difference to their health. I've pretty much stopped buying fish from any LFS and gone more for private breeders that have a good reputation.

I quarantine all new fish unless, like Darlokev, I know the breeder. I do not treat quarantined fish but "keep an eye" on them and only treat if a problem occurs, as its difficult to predict what to treat for. Most treatments will stress fish to some degree so unless needed I don't treat. I think three weeks is long enough in most cases. I keep a Q/T tank running all the time with mature water and filter. I am reluctant to treat established tanks or use Tonics etc as I think adding any chemicals can upset the balance and filtration, good husbandry and regular water changes should ensure good health.

im like you ned quarentine all new fish for upto 2-3 weeks but only treat what comes up other wise it costs a fortune to do every treatment and they dont always mix well and stress the fish which can bring on symtems that look like something its not my new ones i got today will be in quarentine for a week but thats cos i know the last owner but it also in case of whitespot due to traveling a fair distance home

I think I will go with not treating any fish but to keep them in quarantine for approx 3 weeks before moving them to my main tanks.
Is it worth putting substrate in the bottom or just leave it bare? at the moment there is only a few plants in there, I find its easier to clean this way what do you think?

best idea bare bottom tank if you do get a infection the substrate would be contaminated and effect the fish

If you need a substrate use playsand very thin on the bottom 1/8"" TO 1/4" max, then when you move on the fish you can syphon it all out with the water change.
