QT, White Spot and Eye Problems in fish??? Empty QT, White Spot and Eye Problems in fish???

Post by Guest 8/6/2012, 18:12

Since last tuesday we have been treating our 200l tank for white spot @ a half dose to suit our beloved plecos, the course is going well and there is no more spots on the fish, but there is still flicking so we'll continue the treatment untill a fews days after we last see flashing..

I noticed 2 days ago that my new Electric Blue Ram (EBR) has something wrong with its eye looked like there was skin or summit hanging from the eye, and the other rams and Electric Blue Jack Demsey r picking on the EBR, and its flicking and rubbing the eye like its irritating,

Today i came in from work to check how the EBR is coping and now it looks more like a bubble over the eye. the EBR is still flicking and starting to hang around the top of the bogwood keeping out the way. This has been behavior of fish i lost before so i'm increasingly growing concern.

I'v had a little look upon the net to see what it could be i think it might be 'Corneal ulcers' caused by the EBR rubbing/flashing/flicking against things.

Any Advice???

ill upload some picks soon.

If its cleared up now, do a 50% water change, treat with de chlorinator, then do the same in 3 days time. The treatment may just be causing a little irritation, water changes should stop that. Very Happy

You think i should do water change now then 1 in 3 days time? Then after that if they are still flickering what should i do?

and what about the EBR should i take it out leave it?, im taking it out its going to get killed by the other fish.

It could be that but looks more like Corneal ulcers i think its scratched its eye of the ebjd has tried to have its eyes out. cloudy eye is caused by poor diet and i think this fish has had a very good diet since its been in my care anyway, feeding on a range of frozen food tetra prima and beef heart.

oh there would be hell on in the tank, I think Green Terrors r nice but they don't call them green terrors because they are eco freindly lol i think they grow too fast for the ebjd then the GT would be causing chaos in the 450. I think where goiing to add Geo Tapajos orange heads, Cupids or/and Blue Acaras.

I would continue treatment as when the spots disappear you think it has gone but actually they disappear because the bacteria from the spots are released into the tank. It then takes a couple of days for the bacteria to develop further and then problem re-occurs.

I personally would treat for at least week and a half just to make sure all bacteria are dead, as the treatment doesnt kill the bacteria till it is released from the spot.

Hi Chris, Just to clarify what Hodgy said, White spot is a parasite not bacteria. The white spot parasite is invisible to the naked eye, what you see (the white spots) are "cysts" which when they drop off the fish contain hundreds of swarmers, young parasites that are free swimming at this stage, looking for a fish host.
They can only be killed at this stage by the treatment, but can only live a few days without a fish tom feed on. Raising the temperature in the tank by a couple of degrees will speed up the life cycle, ie free swimming, forming a cyst and dropping of again.
Treatment should continue untill all signs of white spots are gone, but continue to treat for a further 7 days to make sure the free swimming stage is eliminated. The best way to avoid this getting into your community tank is to quarantine all your new fish and plants. If you dont see the spots on the fish it could be infected but not yet showing the spots.
Fish are more susceptible to parasites or disease when stress, ie moved, transported and imported or been in several different water conditions over a period.
Make life less stressful and sort yourself out a Q/T tank.

Thanks for that DenTheDog, nice to have a full explanation. now i know and anyone who reads this will know to carry on treatment for 7 days after white spots have gone. I dont want anybody to make the samer mistake so lock it in your memory lol,

I do have a quarantine tank but keep p[utting fish in it to breed lol but serious im going to from now on!

A quarantine tank can be any old tank you pick up from an auction say 18" or 24", It need a really good clean out with bleach rinse well, (when you can no longer smell the bleach it's gone) it only needs (for tropical) a heater and a box filter or at least an air-stone. No gravel or sand is required, and maybe something like half a coconut shell for a fish to hide under if the type of fish that needs it. (the shell can be boiled after each use) NOTE. The shell NOT. Me Shell.!
I Q/T my fish for 2/3 weeks just to make sure nothing develops over that time, dont forget to do water changes during q/t but use separate buckets and equipment,
IT mat seem like a lot of messing about, BUT it saves the stress of seeing your much loved collection of fish die over a few days!....
