Is there a reason u don't want a air pump type?

the little corner ones i use seem to be very good, and sponge filters are very popular with fry/grow out tanks.

if its the noise of a air pump that bothering u get a quieter air pump?

Well we took the air pump out of the filter and tried that alone and it was a massive improvement. Thought I would keep that part and add a separate filter. I have now bought on off eBay earlier tonight in an auction. It's brand new fluval and we got it for £6 inc postage! Well chuffed with that price. More than capable for the tank size. I think it's a case of what I have become used to using. The casing on the old one was what was causing the noise. I even sat the tank on layers or bubblewrAp and despite it being about 10ft away it still drowned out the tv. I'm happy watching the fish tank all night but hubby seems quite attached to watching telly for some reason!
