Background/water Empty Background/water

Hi guys my tank has a black background, it's great for seeing the colours of the fish however it seems to be really dark in the tank, obviously light won't reflect off it so would I be better getting a coloured background to brighten it up a little? Also I have plants in the tank and the water always seems to be tinged green but not sure of thats just the illusion of e black cour and green plants?

And finally seem to be having loads of algue in the tank even though my waters ok and I have loads of bristlenose, otos etc and apple snails?

Hi Tom, I have black backgrounds on some of my tanks and don't have a problem with them looking dark, maybe you have a dark substrate as well? Algae is usually a result of high Nitrate and phosphate levels (of which the algae feed ) and high light levels which it also needs. But your first statement suggests this is otherwise. Still check the nitrate levels because if your biological filter is really working well it will be producing lots of nitrate. And could be a sign that you are overfeeding the vegetarian part of the fishes diet.
If the background is not painted on try a blue colour (it works for me) or a plastic background with a plant pattern or rocks.
If the problem is "green water" cut back on feeding and run an inside box filter with just filter floss inside and it will clear up after a few days.

Cool thanks guys it's a relatively new tank so I've only been feeding them every three days just little amounts but will try turning the background round
