hi andy, i get this in blooms depending on sun light coming through the window and amount i leave the lights on and how long between water changes.
try to cut down the daylight on the tank if thats possible without cutting too much out of the room, stabilize the lighting try work out the best pattern in hours i find on mine to be between 10 and 12, lesser light when theres more hair algae.
other problem that could be flaring this up is too much carbon dioxide for the plants to use up. if you can try increase bubbles/water agitation i have read that by creating air bubbles these grab onto carbon dioxide particles and drag them out of the water.
the hair algae treatment does work i have used it before and keep a bottle for extreme cases but im one of these people who prefer to solve the problem than to mask it up with treatments.
