Algae Empty Algae

Post by Tommore 16/4/2013, 15:45

All off a sudden after adding some new pants from a national pet shop I've been inundated with algae. I've never had a problem with it until I added these plants, my friend who bought some one the same day is having th same problems. There seems to be little balls/strands on all the plants which is now spreading to my bog wood etc? I've got bristlenose and cory on the bottom. I do weekly maintenance and also my water readings are all fine?

Any ideas how I can shift this?

I had the same problem last year...I just had to keep pulling it off...long stringy lengths and the fish got caught up in it sometimes...eventually I took all the plants out...washed each leaf gently rubbing every leaf until I was convinced it was gone and that was it...havnt had the problem since....also check your nitrate/nitrite level just to make sure they havnt shot up...other than that its change the plants...no easy solution really...must have come pre infected with the algae !

As onlineman said check your nitrates. If they are high the algae will only get worse. If you want a quick fix I'd remove plants and if they weren't too expensive just bin em. Then take bogwood and pour boiling water over it to kill off what's attached to they. Hair algae can be a nightmare if left too long. Try to catch it before it takes hold on everything.

It may sound simple but how long are the lights on throughout the day? Or is the sun shining through the window onto the tank at all?

12 hours a day is a long time. Try to reduce this unless it is a heavily planted tank.

i have my light on 12 - 14 hrs a day but and bit of sunlight gets into tank but I suffer very little with algae...bit on glass but that's soon scraped away occasionally....I always leave the back of the tank...leave it for fish to browse on...always have !....

I think the underlying problem is with the new plants....they either need to be cleaned or binned....and nitrate/nitrite levels checked !....we could go on and on about how long lights should be on etc...everyone will have a different opinion tho !....let us know how you fair with the algae problem...if you get it cleared or not ?...cheers
