Rescued Tiger Shovel nose catfish

Post by dandy cichlids on 20/11/2011, 13:17

I have acquired a 5 inch tiger shovel nose catfish in a tank I purchased, he is in a pretty bad way fins are chewed and lost a whisker or 2. He had been kept with large fish in a big tank and looks like he has not been feeding and getting picked on.
I have re homed him in with my young malawis (fish from 2 to 4 inch) in my 4ft juwel vision 260 ltr. I have tried feeding lots of different food from flake, pellets, granules and frozen food (brine shrimp, krill, and bloodworm). But he shows no interest in feeding and hangs around the surface of the tank and is very lethargic, hiding behind pipes and filters.
I have resorted to removing him from the tank on a daily basis and placing him into a bucket with lots of defrosted frozen food (brine shrimp, krill, and bloodworm). I stir the water and this forces him to intake some food filling his belly then place him back in the tank. This seems to be working as when he has a full belly he looks a lot better and is holding his own and not hiding behind pipes and filter, (still just hanging around the surface).
I have had him (well I am calling him a him) for 1 week now and he is doing ok looking a lot better than when I got him. Might be a slow process but will try my best to save this lovely fish (getting quite attached to him lol).
I do have the tank space to house him as I do have several tanks the biggest being a 7ft x 30 inches x 28 inches. But I could be looking to re home this fish (experienced catfish keepers only with a suitable tank) will see when he is fit and feeding on his own.
I will keep you all updated on his progress and will add some pictures

Ok so your calling a responsible fishkeeper childish mate for trying his best to care for a mistreated fish. I'm sure if he wanted to berate your mindless fishkeeping he would have in your red tailed cat thread.

tiger shovel nose cats have been recorded up to 5 foot in the wild but you are right normally about 3 foot in captivity he will have plenty of room to grow on in my 7ft x 30 inches x 28 inches tank until i find him a suitable home just hope he recovers to full health

Norman has some large fish, giraffes and shovelnoses. He might take it off your hands.

A think hes definitley ate, you can see in the comparison of the 2 photos that his bellys bigger. Also am not sure if its photo quality or not but his colour looks a though its improved slightley. But as I said could be the photo quality.

Well I think the time has come tostart looking to re home this Tiger Shovel Nose Cat he is 5 inch in size (but will grow fast) feeding well on Various defrosted frozen foods (bloodworm, brine shrimp, krill) he is partial to a few young malawis so I have noticed. You will need a big tank to house this fish as they can grow up to about 4ft. He will eat anything that will fit in his mouth so would only be able to keep him with large fish when he grows. Experienced fish keepers only anyone interested please get in touch
