If you have any friends that have any established filter media you could borrow, that would be the best solution. Nitrite spikes are generally quick. Smile

I use the fluval 3 plus and used to have the same problem regarding the sponges. I stopped turning them round and started to clean the sponge slightly and get a cotton bud and clean the impellor chamber and the outlet pipe. Found this worked better overall.

As for your nitrite spike I'm unsure. Maybe the reduced flow though the media caused an ammonia spike you were unaware of that caused the nitrite spike. How severe is the spike?

I'd just try to increase the oxygen levels in the water and do some water changes till it comes down.

Like a "add this to your aquarium then 24 hours later add fish" product? I'm sceptical about these sort of products, can't.see how bacteria can lay dormant in them if thats what they are claiming.

it all depends which puts less stress
on the fish i am not going to introduce
fish in to this tank till it is fully cycled
so it looks like i might be going to boot
to see if i can get a bottle of pure ammonia
to dose with .05 ppm a day
