dont beat yourself up Timmy...these things can happen due to no fault of our own sometimes. see how your water is and if theres nothing off then it will probably remain a mystery

yeah done tests and they all zero. gutted. done a 25% water change as well just in case, water seems a tad cloudy but i think thats due to cucumber.

not being funny but have you tried them on courgette?
has a lower water content then cucumber and your local aldi should sell them cheap enough otherwise try asda mate
i know how gutted you are about the loss mate it's a horrible feeling but sometimes there just doesn't seem to be a sensible reason for it, if there were you would be able to put it right, as it is you just have to hope everything's going to be ok

WELL WELL WELL

You will never believe this guys n gals. Just seen something strange thought it was a baby guppy trapped behind my filter, on further investigation theres at least 3-4, 1cm long baby bristlenose plecs.

Now what do yous make of that?

Am i right in thinking the plec that was missing and later died (i assumed was a male was actually a female that died after giving birth) or is it the male (as it had bristles) that has been killed off the female after fanning them?

Either way the loss of my bigger plec has been brought me at least 4 babies. How many do they give birth too?

I was told on here they wouldnt give birth till mature (4-5 inches)...

Well folks opinions plz and dare i clean me filter as some could in there a guess.

my bristlenose pairs produce upto 130 fish in a single spawn. the male will guard the eggs/fry for around a week or two so you should have seen this happening. the fry are quite hardy and will survive in tight spots such as filters, i have two adults that started their lives in my fluval fx5

Ive just had the internal filter apart, well the filters out of it and checked it. It was all clear, ive counted four of em so god knows where all the others are hiding. Very Happy

how bigs the tank and where could the male possibly "cave up" with the eggs for a long period of time? what are the other tankmates as the young may have been eaten. another possibility is they could have bred and the male got spooked and "kicked" his eggs out. the vast majority of the eggs will have been eaten but if a few got in spots where the fish couldnt get to they could have survived and be the young fry you see now. do you have a photo and i could probably age them for you?

also as ian said, tights over the filter intake stop them getting trapped but i dont bother doing this with internals as the bn fry are normally a good size when venturing out the cave. i run fluval 3+ internals on my breeding tanks for bristlenose and have never had a problem.

The tank is 3ft/180l and has a shipwreck and a few pots they can hide in.
Kev they are about 10-12mm long bud, i can only see 4 of them.

if they are over a centimetre then id say they are at least 2 weeks old. you might still find more yet they seem to hide during the day in community tanks and come out at night when young.

courgette is the food to feed your young on as cucumber has no benefit almost to them as its 70 percent water hope this helps and check for overstocking if just add young put a big airstone i this will help to up the oxygen level mate or use a powerhead with a sponge on the bottom

ive had browns before that produced 200 plus young every 4 weeks you may want to look inside your filter as they can sometimes go up the intake strainer if running an external mate ive also had l144s produce 80 young in one go and largest batch ever of super reds was 149 of one pair only 1 didnt survive hope this helps Very Happy

the U4 filter is blowing bubbles/air into the tank from the top, will this not be sufficient? i can add an airstone if you think this will help.

I cant get courgettes at the minute Sad

cheers for the help so far Steve.
