New African Cichlid Tank
Well tomorrow is the first day of my first ever cichlid tank and I've decided to keep a thread to show my progress.
I've purchased a Fluval Roma 240 and all the necessary kit to do this and have decided to go down the fishless cycle route. Stay tuned for pics and progress.

Re: New African Cichlid Tank
I bought some from amazon I think for about £5.00. Its just normal household ammonia so think it will be 9.5% ammonia and the rest water.
Re: New African Cichlid Tank
put a small amount in a test tube
from a test kit or something like that
and shake it if bubbles form and stay
there its not pure it a some sort of
detergent in it if the bubbles dissipate
nearly straight away its pure just a quick
and easy way to check that is pure

Re: New African Cichlid Tank
Right so here we go!
MY NEW EMPTY TANK, FINALLY OUT OF THE GARAGE!
FILTER IM USING FOR THIS, OVER FILTERING TO TRY KEEP IT AS CLEAN AS POSS!
WATER IS GOING IN, NEWS PAPER IS WET SO THAT THE SUBSTRATE IS NOT DISTURBED.
NOW BEGINS THE CYCLE, LOTS OF WAITING!
THIS WILL BE MY FIRST TWO FISH, PAID FOR AND BEEN HELD FOR ME UNTILL THE TANK IS READY. THEY ARE A WILD PAIR OF AULONOCARA KORNELIAE AND THE FEMALE IS HOLDING WHICH IS HOPEFULLY GOING TO BE KEPT FOR ME ALSO!
TO BE CONTINUED........

Re: New African Cichlid Tank
I bought them from Peter barratts and strikes I think. They are just slate rocks from the garden section outside. 3 for £10 or something.

Re: New African Cichlid Tank
Day eight and the cycle seems to be coming along nicely. I squeezed my filter sponges from another tank into it last night to try and speed things along a little.
This morning I've done some water tests and my ammonia I added yesterday is 0ppm and the nitrite is through the roof so looking good. Hopefully just another week or so.

Re: New African Cichlid Tank
Not checked it yet Biff, I'll give it a go when I get in tonight and let you know.
Re: New African Cichlid Tank
i was just wondering as it can drop during
cycling and some times needs to be buffed
up with a touch of bicarb just to pull it back
up even in Malawi tanks

Re: New African Cichlid Tank
The PH is about 7.8, do you think that should be ok. Will probs slowly rise with the coral gravel in there.
Re: New African Cichlid Tank

Re: New African Cichlid Tank
Righto will do, I'll check it the morning I go to collect the fish after I've done a major water change.
Re: New African Cichlid Tank
right ok i would check it before the fish
go in like a say it it needs pulling up try
a level teaspoon of bicarb mix it in a tea
cup with a drop of tank water to dissolve it
then check ph again an hour later

Re: New African Cichlid Tank
Up to date pic now that the water has cleared. Starting to get brown algae on the rocks since I took this so leaving the light off for a few days til I get the bristlenose on the job
Re: New African Cichlid Tank
Done another water check today and it has gone through 4ppm ammonia in just over 10 hours! Nitrite is still sky high however, is this likely to just drop all of a sudden very fast?
Re: New African Cichlid Tank
