Best filter media for Cichlids?
I've a Fluval 305 external and was wondering what everybody recommends as the best filter media to use with Cichlids. Does anyone know the best places to buy it cheap etc?

I've got some coral sand now so hopefully that will do for the PH. Do you think coral frags would be needed also? I was wondering what's best for bacteria and also keeping the water clear.

For bacteria use something that has larger surface area for it to grow. I saw someone use hair curlers in there filter once for it to grow on!

What's the DIY trick? I've got a bag full of ceramic media that they use for the bottom of biorbs so do you think that will work?

The fluffy material on a paint roller am sure he said you can get 3 for £1. And bacteria will grow on it yes. Bacteria as I said will grow on anything with a surface area. But for your filter you obviously want media that catchs particles also.

In my externals i use a mixture of bio balls and ceramic media in bottom 2 compartments (plus course foam on top of them top in some of them) and in top i use filter matting (18 - 22mm) doubled or trebled ( i sell this matting as buy it in bulk £3 for 1 meter x 700cm) and all my tanks are crystal clear. Saying that i have 2 externals on each of my 3 main large tanks plus internals
