Shrimp issue - did we do the right thing ?
I have finally put all my fish in my tank , we have recently bought a red cap and 2 plecos yesterday and so in the large tank we have a small oranda ( tiny ) and a small black moor and a red cap (medium) and 2 plecos in a 54 litre tank. We thought that we should buy an algae eater for our 14 litre common goldfish tank as we thought the tank could use one. Today we went to pets at home thinking of a pleco and found a lovely shrimp instead. We got informed about the shrimp and what it need so we bought it some frozen food and when we got home we introduced it, however it was not a success as the goldfish we constantly trying to eat the shrimp and vigorously attacking and biting the shrimp. The shrimp would try and hide on top of the filter but we thought he would get killed as he was constantly swimming away and being scared so in panic we took the shrimp out of the little tank and quickly put him in the net and bobbed him in the big tank in the net for a couple of seconds and plopped him in , he seemed of when we put him in but I understand that he might not be used to the temperature of this tank and you’re not supposed to add another fish for a week however we thought this would be best for his safety. We didn’t put any of his water in the big tank because it was already in the small tank, I was just wondering have we done the right thing putting him in the big tank or should we have left him?

carp (gold fish ) eat prawns and crawfish so it might not of been the best idea putting him/her in the goldfish tank he might be ok in with the fancys but keep an eye on him they all like to eat them just the fancys carnt swim as fast as common goldfish

Thanks , we went to pets at home and they said he would be okay becasue the goldfish wernt big , because we asked if he was okay with them , in the shop he was in with large fancys , so far we have had him since 12pm and he has swam next to them and been so close to them and they havent bothered but we will keep watching just to make sure.

What type of pleco do u have? What temp is your tank?,
If its cold water i hope you mean hillstream loach! (butterfly/cold water pleco).
Not too sure about goldfish and shrimp but i think they wouldn't meet in the wild so could be a snack for goldfish.
pets at home is definitely not the best place to buy fish or ask advice.

Hi Katy, Shrimps and Goldfish are not a good idea, firstly Goldfish eat shrimp as part of their diet, so as soon as the goldfish can get it into its mouth,he's dinner! Shrimps also need slightly different water conditions to a goldfish tank, as they just do not tolerate nitrite in the water, (which you will have until your filter matures).
Pets at home are just not experienced enough to give advice, a lfs (local fish shop) will be better able to offer good advice, or ask on here before you next want to add to you setup.
Maybe a small plastic tank for the shrimp or large jar, with plenty of water changes and a bit of live pond plant will keep it happy and not be bullied.
Like the photos of your fish, the fish look good and healthy.

Thanks , we had our water tested about 4 weeks ago at our local pet shop and he said everything was clear , we have had the shrimp for 24 hours now and he seems to be doing fine , hes walking and swimming and climbing and eating his food, he was in with the fancys when we bought him , he can hide places where only him and the plecos can go - eg beside the filter , our fish havent really bothered him , they are so close to him and he just walks of , they have went up and had a look however when the shrimp moved they just swam passed , they have never chased him like the common goldfish , will he be ok , If anything did happen in the future would he need a filter in his tank ??

A filter in the tank would be ideal, but would have to be a small electric one or an air driven box filter.
Baby shrimps are VERY small and can be sucked into a big filter. Baby shrimps are also fish food (even fancy goldfish eat them). Someday you may want to set up a small tank just for Shrimps, with plants and moss balls ect.
